Not sure what to do with this one. It's an interesting, well written piece of prose, but I get skeevey when the author expresses delight in becoming part of the story ("chills" is what he calls it). This feels like a piece that was shopped around and found no takers except for Grantland.

But yeah, reading that story I kept thinking "more about the club!"

I don't think it's an all-out atrocity to the level of the dude's twitter mentions. I probably would have published it. Maybe massaged it a little - Grantland doesn't seem to have a proper editor - but still published it, because it's a really captivating story.

Those getting overly sanctimonious about the publishing of this article should probably reserve some of their judgment for Deadspin's "outing" of Manti Teo's non-existent girlfriend. There are significant parallels, except for the part about Teo not taking his own life. Had he (and he was clearly suffering mentally at the time of publication), would Deadspin have tabled the article?
Now, the Deadspin outing of Teo did have a lot less first-person and glee than Hannan seemed to express. Like I said, that was more the problem, not the publishing or even the push to uncover the truth.
