Maybe a couple times to get your punt coverage team some looks. But isn't it 1000% more important to evaluate your offense? Particularly on 4th down?
The Browns were killed in the possession time against Green Bay (and several other facets of the game). What's the point of punting after a 3-and-out? If you make the first down, you get to continue getting some work in for your offense. If you fail, you give a shorter field for your defense (a good thing no matter where you are on the field). If they score quickly, fine. It's the offense's ball again and you know how your red zone D looks.
These are exhibition games, right?

It's a monkey see, monkey do league. Every other coach punts on 4th, so I will too.

Never understood why they kick extra points either. Go for 2, work on those plays.

I can see keeping the 2 point conversion secret- you can run any play as a 2 point style play, particularly if you get to the goal line-ish area.
I agree about punting- should be tried for evaluating punts and/or scrubs for special teams work, but go for it with the starters in the other 60% of the time.

the "problem" is that if you do that, you get less time to evaluate your defense.
consider the possibilities: you succeed and hold onto the ball: more time for offense is less time for defense. you fail and turn the ball over: defenses need to practice on the other side of the 50, because the offenses are different there. plus, if the defense sucks and the ball's turned over on their side of the field, it limits the repetitions they get.

Defenses are much more vanilla than offenses in preseason (which are already vanilla). Defenses rely very little on timing compared to receivers running routes, etc. It's not nearly as important for defenses to get work in (at least, that's my non-professional opinion).
Also, if you're worried about the defense not getting enough reps, just play them well into, say, the second quarter!

i'm not talking about starters, per se..... just sayin that teams are 50% defense, and they've gotta evaluate those players, too
