from hornfans: My point was that a coach can make a player run steps for HOURS and that is "football" but cannot put a guy in a room?
and
Under all the crap on both sides, the bottom line is that all Leach did was call him out and embarrass the guy, because he felt his attitude was poor. He didn't punch him in the face. He didn't throw a chair at him. He didn't even make him exercise. The only thing he hurt was the kid's pride.
And if a coach can't call out someone with a poor attitude and embarrass him a little to set an example to the rest of the team that slackers will not be tolerated, something that has been going on since the beginning of time, then exactly what is he allowed to do to discipline someone?
Now I know Leach's way of doing things was creative and uncommon, but when it comes right down to it, it wasn't anything more harmful than anything other coaches have been doing since forever. And this case would have never become an issue if the kid would have just been any player, and not the son of Craig James.
What's next? A coach suspends a player for a game, and the kid (or his dad) is going to file a complaint and get his coach fired for that? For embarrassing him? Seriously.
This is why, whether you like Leach or not, you hope like hell Tech doesn't win this case and get to fire Leach "for cause." Because it will set a poor precedent, and will further erode a coach's power to instill discipline in his team.
