Is that right? Seems like a pittance for New England.
Not saying Cassell is a Hall of Famer, but I thought they'd be able to squeeze a first rounder out of one of several teams (except for the ones that are, you know, happy with Sage Rosenfelds).

I agree. The media is lauding Belichek for having a heart and giving his friend a deal. I think he's sort of giving the finger to the rest of the league by doing this cupcake deal.

Sure ruins Derek Anderson's trade value (more so).
I can't think of any franchised player that goes for a second rounder (punters/kickers aside).

i think the franchising of cassell was just posturing
cassell and vrabel for a 2nd --- vrabel is, what, 38? i'll go on the record as saying that i think the pats are gonna end up coming out of this smelling like a rose.
sure, i suppose they might have been able to get a bit more for him, but not much.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think Cassell is fantastic, or even a pro-bowler. But, there are multiple teams that I have to think would give up a better pick. San Fran, Minnesota, Tampa Bay, Detroit (maybe their second rounder - get him out of the conference), etc. Apparenly Denver too? cbs4denver.com/broncos/broncos.cutler.nfl.2.946829.html

all i can say about the cutler thing is WOW
i'm shocked. literally.
i think cutler is perfect for denver. he's got a gun, and in that weather, you need one. i'm not calling him the second coming of elway, but he really seems to fit in there.
wow.

I agree with Krall in that there are teams that need Cassell more (and I'd prefer him in Minnesota over Sage Rosenfels). So the Pats may have been shorted on value. But this is also something of a philosophy thing for Belicheck- he's always acted like it doesn't matter if he deals away all-stars, he'll find someone equally good.
Geoff, are the Cleveland folks still hopeful about Brady Quinn? If there was enough discontent among the natives I could see Cutler going there, but my understanding is that most of the poor performance last year is being blamed on Romeo Crennel.

Apparently, the new regime isn't sold on Quinn. Neither are many of us. I don't think he threw a pass more than 10 yards for the few games he did play. Now, I'm not sure if that was by design or not.
They certainly aren't committed to him. It'll probably be yet another QB battle going into the preseason. Yipee.

Well, if the Pats win the Super Bowl next year, now we'll know why.
