I've seen some stuff about the Pac-10 inviting Utah, which makes a lot more sense than those other Big 12 schools. If that's the case, who's the odd school out?
If this happens, will the BCS rescind its automatic bid to conferences who have been pillaged?
Long term, if this happens, won't it sort of imply a playoff system is coming? I can't imagine this "Super 3" format coexisting with the current BCS structure.

Utah's always been a backup plan for the Pac 10, but they really don't deliver that many TVs. The Mormon population isn't that large.
This will I feel definitely lead towards a playoff. If you read that Wetzel article, the revenue for a playoff is staggering. I'm having a real hard time figuring out why Presidents are turning that money down.
If this happens, there won't be a Big12, so the Fiesta will have to reorganize. Actually, the entire BCS will have to reorganize. The Big 10 is also going to expand, and the SEC commish is on record as saying they won't stand pat. The landscape is going to drastically shift.
Who's going to get screwed here is Baylor and Iowa St and Kansas and them. They can probably go to an extended Mountain West or something. Probably better for them competitively, but not financially. The one school in all this I am confused about is Kansas. They have a top 5 basketball school, hard to see them in an inferior league, but who knows.
If you believe the sources in the articles, the Pac 10 doesn't want Baylor in any way shape or form. They really do want Colorado though. Bob Bullock can roll over in his grave, but neither Baylor nor the Baylor lookouts in the legislature have enough pull to get them included in another deal. They blew their wad 15 years ago by forcing themselves in the Big 12. Although to be fair, outside of football Baylor isn't all that bad athletically.
There is another thing to consider with Baylor, and this isn't some rant against the godless left, but Cal will have absolutely nothing to do with any religious school. This is why BYU isn't in the Pac 10. You can do the work, but their regents are on public record stating this. They're not shy about wanting nothing to do with any religious school. And since all votes in the Pac 10 must be unanimous, their biases hold a lot of sway. Baylor doesn't have a shot. If they actually get in to this thing, I will be beyond shocked.

So where exactly is the SEC in all of this? Are they going to pick and choose the Big12's leftovers? Are they making a play for OU and OSU and others? Why wouldn't they? Are they going to go after the Big East?

SEC will most likely go after some combination of GT, FSU, MIA, Clemson and Va Tech. Which would of course cause the ACC to have to merge with the Big East. It's doubtful if Florida would let in FSU or Miami, but remains to be seen.

Here's another question: Why would Texas' preference be to keep the Big12 together, as I've seen indicated? Because they actually are loyal to the Big 12, despite the large piles of money they could seemingly get elsewhere?

There are a couple reasons why Texas doesn't want to move:
1. It is easier for Texas to win lots of games and sit on top of the rankings in the Big XII than in a 16 team PAC-10, especially when some of the easy wins are cut away. 2. Texas is currently winning most of the recruits in Texas. Adding the PAC-10 schools will give teams like UCLA, USC, etc. more exposure and make recruiting more difficult. 3. Texas has more control of the Big XII. 4. Texas would prefer to get a Texas-only TV network up and running, and will have an easier time doing so in the Big XII than the PAC-10.
My gut feeling is that the final shakeout will have 4 power conferences (PAC 10+ 6, Big Ten + ND, SEC and a heavily modified ACC). I foresee that the Big XII and Big Easy disintegrate under this scenario. And I foresee 4 conference championship games, with the 4 winners in a +1 situation (hence an 8 team playoff).
The other thing to discuss is that Kansas is being held down by Kansas State. There's a state law saying the two are tied together. If it wasn't for that I think the Big Ten would also be looking at KU. As it is the Mizzou fans are really excited because on top of the other benefits of going to the Big Ten they'll royally hose Kansas in the process.

And now word is that Colorado is going to force the issue by accepting the PAC-10's offer regardless of whatever else happens. That may very well implode the Big XII.

Yeah I saw that coming. Like Colorado was going to sit back and let Baylor and the legislature dictate where they can and can't go.

I think Colorado really wanted out. There were rumors that Texas is the real target for the PAC-10 but this just blows it out of the water.
Baylor is in trouble but I think the real loser in all this is going to be Kansas. Unless they can find a way to get a Big Ten invite they may be hosed.

I'd also like to toot my own horn here. On the goodbye Big XII thread I predicted Texas, A&M and Colorado would join the PAC 10. I also threw out OU and OSU as candidates to get them up 16. I didn't foresee the Tech invite.

According to Chip Brown, he said on Sportscenter that Texas, TT, Colorado, OSU, OU and A&M have accepted the Pac 10's offer. Baylor not included.
Nebraska is expected to accept the Big 10 in the next 48 hours.
Big 12 is over.
